Report: Scottsbluff, Gering students making progress, but still need improvement

Scottsbluff and Gering students showed improvement in the major academic categories in the latest state of the Schools report released by the Nebraska Department of Education, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Scottsbluff Curriculum Director Mike Mason saw steady progress in reading, science and writing, and was happy with the fact the school has seen improvement for several years in a row. Mason says the steady improvement is due to the hard work of the faculty.

Mason says the district does need to make progress district-wide in math, and is in the process of adopting new curriculum that will be used in the elementary schools this year and the secondary schools next year.

In Gering, Curriculum Director Terri Martin says there was incremental progress in all areas, but she admits the one needing the most help is reading. Martin says the good news is that a plan is in place to address the situation.

Martin says the 7th graders, after taking a dip in math in the previous testing period, made a significant improvement this year.
