Gering planning grant application denied again

(Rawnda Pierce)

Gering and Twin Cities Development will try for a third time to get a $30,000 planning grant for downtown redevelopment after getting word their secod application for funding has been rejected. Twin Cities Development Executive Director Rawnda Pierce says the application was denied by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development's Block Grant Program for lack of input from the business community, the same reason given the last time.

Pierce says there is another application period in March and they will try again. Pierce emphasized the competition for the planning grants is getting tougher.

Pierce says there is business support for doing the project and they just need to find out what they need to do get that across to the people determining who gets the grant. An area from the Union Pacific Railroad track to two blocks south of M street has been identified as the area that would be improved.

Gering needs to get the planning grant before they can apply for $350,000 in implementation money to actually make improvements.
