He managed cattle operations in Sioux County both before and after his marriage to Betty Lashley, on May 19, 1951 in Morrill, Nebraska. In 1967, Wayne and Betty adopted their only son, Jeff. They purchased a ranch in rural Bayard and have owned and operated the ranch for over 50 years. Betty preceded Wayne in death in May of 2012.

His parents, wife Betty, three brothers and three sisters preceded Wayne in death. He is survived by his son Jeff and his wife Sue Hoagland of Missouri Valley, IA, grandchildren Kevin and Leslie, sisters Pat Hankens of Wheatland, WY and Mary Rien of Pueblo and nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

Wayne will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind, honest rancher who believed a hard day of work was good for both the body and the soul.
