Chauncey arraigned in District Court
Two of the three counts against the 26 year old former Gering man charged in the 2008 death of two year old Juliette Geurts have been dismissed. During a Scotts Bluff County District Court arraignment hearing Friday, special prosecutor Jim Zimerman requested the court dismiss count two, the manslaughter charge and count three, the misdemeanor charge of providing false information to police due to statute of limitations.
Dustin Chauncey will face trial in August on the remaining charge of felony child abuse resulting in death. He could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
A pretrial conference is set for July 22nd at 8 a.m. A trial date was set for the August 5th jury term
Chauncey, the child's mother Charyse Geurts and another male were in the Gering home when Charyse reported she found Juliette dead in her crib on July 11th, 2008. The case has been investigated as a homicide after the autopsy showed the child died of blunt force trauma. Charyse Geurts had lesser charges, which were dismissed in the case due to statute of limitations requirements.
