South Dakota plant toured by Bluffs leaders files for bankruptcy
A South Dakota meat packing facility that was toured by Scottsbluff leaders as they consider a proposed processing facility in Scottsbluff has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Aberdeen Attorney Rory King says Northern Beef Packers in Aberdeen, South Dakota, filed for bankruptcy protection Friday, according to KSFY TV in Sioux City.
No court hearings have been filed yet and more information would have to come from the company.
Employees at the plant went without a paycheck last week, although that is expected to be rectified this week
The plant was visited by members the Scottsbluff city council and TCD board along with others interested in the project. A plant cited as a possible model for the local facility, Caviness Beef Packing of Hereford, Texas, was recently fined $120,000 after being cited by US Department of Labor's OSHA for failing to protect workers from various workplace hazards.
