Phillipe "Phil" Hernandez Sr., 71, Mitchell
Phillipe "Phil" Hernandez Sr., 71, of Mitchell, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the Mitchell Care Center surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 18, 2013, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Mitchell with Father Thomas Gudipalli officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Mitchell Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps. At Phil's request cremation has taken place at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory.
A rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Mitchell. A memorial has been established to St. Theresa Catholic Church in Mitchell.
Phil, also known as Shorty, was born February 5, 1942, in Marquez, Texas to Sebastian and Dionicia (Guevara) Hernandez. The family moved later that year to Lyman and in 1946 to Mitchell. He attended school at Mitchell Public Schools. Phil joined the United States Marine Corps in 1961 and served a short time before being honorably discharged. He married Victoria Alvarado on June 4, 1966 and to this union five children were born. He was employed at Magnolia Homes until his retirement. He then moved to Lincoln, until recently moving back to Mitchell.
Survivors include his sons, Phillip Jr. (Joyce) Hernandez of Papillion and John (Melissa) Hernandez of Lyman; daughters, Kristina (Jose) Avila of Lincoln and Katrina (Lee) Fitzwater of College Station, Texas; grandchildren, Alyssa and Stephen Hernandez, David Hernandez, Victoria Avila, and Derek, Keith, Robert and Christopher Fitzwater; brothers, Victor (Rosemary) Hernandez of Mitchell and Louie Hernandez of Omaha; sisters, Romana (Frank) Ramirez of Hermiston, Oregon, Julia (Terry) Castillo of Mitchell, Jennie Herrera of Mitchell, Connie (Larry) Slenker of Dover, Pennsylvania and Mary (Ray) Kresha of Canyon Lake, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, John Patrick; brothers, Sylvester, Marcello, Ray, George and Joe Hernandez; and sister, Frances Hernandez.
