Simpson, Lynne Cheney continue spat
CASPER, Wyo. (AP) _ Former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson says Lynne Cheney told him to ``shut up'' during a reception Saturday night in Cody because of his support for incumbent Mike Enzi.
The Cheneys' daughter, Liz Cheney, is challenging Enzi in next year's Republican primary.
Simpson said he explained to Cheney that he has a history with Enzi that goes back decades -- and that, in fact, Simpson is the reason Enzi is in public life at all.
Both Simpson and Cheney, the wife of former Vice President Dick Cheney, say the dispute centered on Simpson's earlier refusal to sign a football for Cheney's granddaughter at a recent fundraiser in Laramie.
Simpson tells the Casper Star-Tribune he had refused a request from Liz Cheney's daughter to sign the football when the girl said she didn't know if it was going to be used for campaign purposes.
Liz Cheney's campaign on Tuesday released a statement from Lynne Cheney saying Simpson had been rude to her granddaughter.
