Porter believes diverse background would be a plus
The first of four finalists has been interviewed by the Gering school board in the process of hiring a new superintendent. Robert Porter is currently Superintendent of Wallace, Nebraska Public Schools.
Porter worked in advertising at the Kearney Hub for the early part of his professional career, and did not have his first teaching job until he was 32. Porter told KNEB News he believes his experience in private industry will bring a little different perspective to the job that most candidates don't have.
Porter currently works for a district that provides a laptop computer for for every junior and senior high student. He says it allows for an expanded curriculum, more flexibility and better interaction between teacher and student. He says Gering is a much larger district than Wallace, so it may be a challenge but he believes it could be done through grants and other means.
Porter says his family is excited about the opportunities Gering brings, not only educationally, but also because of the beautiful setting and all that a larger community offers. Porter says transparency is important, and he prefers to emphasize the positives in the district while realizing the challenges.
The school board will continue with interviews of the other three finalists between now and Thursday evening. The Board will then meet Friday at 3 p.m. and enter into executive session to review the input. They hope to offer someone a tentative contract on Sunday, January 26th and then confirm that selection at the board meeting February 18th.
