Luva Eileen (Messersmith) Bauer, 88, passed from this life on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Nebraska.
Eileen was born February 27, 1925 to Frank E. and Luva (Roberts) Messersmith and grew up on the family ranch 20 miles northeast of Alliance. After graduating from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis, she attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for a year and took a teaching position at an area rural school.
She married the love of her life, Orville Herman Bauer, in Alliance on February 28, 1946 and the couple took up residence at the Bauer family ranch seven miles northeast of Alliance. They were blessed with two children, Larry and Linda. Eileen enjoyed the busy life of a ranch wife and mother until her "retirement," after which she worked such part-time jobs as hostess at Hardee's and cashier at Hatch Drug. After the passing of her husband in 1997, she moved into town, living at the Good Samaritan Village, Sandhills Assisted Living Center, and finally at Crossroads Assisted Living.
Eileen was proud to have been a leader of both 4-H and the Home Extension Club. She was also a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, RSVP and a volunteer at the Mission Store. She devoted herself to God as a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Alliance.
Eileen is survived by her children, Larry (Deb) Bauer of Alliance and Linda (DeWayne) Schick of Grand Island; grandchildren, Greg Schick of Kennesaw, GA, Michelle (Andy) Hickox of Alliance, and Rebecca Bauer of Scottsbluff; brothers, Ken Messersmith of Alliance and Rex (Wilma) Messersmith of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Barbara Messersmith of Hemingford; brother-in-law, Lyle Rogers of Pendleton, OR; and great grandchildren, Ben, Julia and Penny Schick, Aiden Zaro and Edwin Hickox.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Betty Rogers, brothers Robert, Frank and Lee and a great grandson, Peter Schick.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alliance with Jeanie Sedivy officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials can be made in care of the Alliance United Methodist Church, Alliance Volunteer Fire Department, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
