Frieda Anna (Holz) Schafer, 87, Scottsbluff

Frieda Anna (Holz) Schafer, 87, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Her funeral service will be held at 10am on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Jeffery Grams officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 11am until 7pm on Wednesday at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials in Frieda's memory be given in care of the church. Online condolences may be left at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff is in charge of arrangements.

Frieda was born November 12, 1925 in Beatrice, NE to George and Anna (Delabar) Holz. She was brought before God in Holy Baptism in the Lutheran Faith at Beatrice on Nov 29, 1925. She renewed her baptism vows in confirmation May 1939 at Peace Lutheran Church in Plymouth, NE. She moved with her parents to Plymouth, NE in 1929 where she received her education. She was employed at Lutheran Hospital in Beatrice during WWII. She married Warren Schafer on April 6, 1947. They made their home in Beatrice, and then in 1954 they moved to Louisville, KY while her husband finished his training, and then moved to Scottsbluff after living in Fort Morgan, CO for a few months.

Frieda enrolled in Practical Nursing School and graduated with the first Practical Nursing Class in Scottsbluff and received her state license in July of 1956. She was employed at St. Mary's Hospital, Western Nebraska General Hospital, and later Regional West Medical Center for over 30 years and also working with her husband in their business of W & F Medical Electronics.

Frieda was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church since moving to Scottsbluff. She was past president of St. John's Evening Guild and St. John's Mission Society, member of Licensed Practical Nurses Association and served on the state board, past president of LPNAN Division Association, interim president of AARP, life member of VFW Auxiliary Post 1681, chairperson for VFW Auxiliary entertainment committee, served as Cub Scout Den Mother, Blue Bird leader and Sunday School teacher, and active in the Jail Ministry. After retiring after 30 years of nursing, she became a foster Grandparent for 11 years at Lincoln Heights School.

Frieda enjoyed traveling, bowling, sewing, crocheting and crafts. She received Grand Champion on numerous items she crocheted.

She is survived by her son Kenneth (Megan) Schafer of Casper, WY; daughter Darla (Dennis) Kraft of Alt, CO; grandchildren Chris (Mary) Schafer, Keith Schafer, Kelly (Rhonda) Schafer, Brandon Schafer, Jonathan Vantrease, Lance Kraft and Dusty Kraft; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; sisters in law Marge Balderson, Betty Arnold and Alvina Holz; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, husband Warren, son Gary Schafer, grandson Jason Corbett, 5 brothers and 3 sisters preceded her in death.
