Bluffs council to get report on adding firefighter
The Scottsbluff city council Monday evening will receive City Manager Rick Kuckkahn's report on authorizing a 15th firefighter to the city fire department. Kuckkahn and Fire Chief Dana Miller have been reviewing staffing levels, shift schedules, firefighter duties and operating procedures to determine the need to replace the firefighter that was removed during budget adjustments several years ago.
Miller says in a letter to the council that in the last fiscal year the Fire Department spent $49,000 on overtime to adjust for minimum staffing on the short staffed shift. Miller says the a new staff member would "balance all shifts to the same number, eliminate the huge overtime expense, and relieve stress to staff members to cover all of the extra shifts. "
Miller said he would like to continue background checks on the active applicant list which would allow for a recommendation to Kuckkahn for permission to make a tentative job offer for the additional position, which has been included as part of the budget.
