Local health care advocates excited about Obamacare

Local health care advocates said today the new federal health care law is coming October 1st and residents without insurance need to be able to take advantage of it.

The marketplaces that open October 1st will allow consumers to comparison shop for health insurance and see whether they qualify for federal subsidies. Jennifer Rogers, Program Director for Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska, says the marketplace should drastically reduce the 195,000 uninsured Nebraskans. Rogers says a vast majority of the people without insurance are employed full time and most of the others are children.

Jeff Tracy, Director of CAPWN's Health Center, says studies have shown those without insurance have fewer health visits than those with insurance or Medicare. He says the marketplace should give those currently uninsured the ability to affordably gain insurance and get the preventative and other health care they have not received before.

Tracy says those with insurance currently will not be impacted by the new law. Visit HEALTHCARE.gov to learn more and call 1-877-977-3906 to obtain an appointment with local CAPWN counselors that will help you apply.
