County Board approves applying for WING grant funding
The Scotts Bluff County Commissioners voiced their support Monday for the WING Drug Task Force by approving the annual grant application for BYRNE grant funds from the federal government.
The task force currently has ten full-time officers from various jurisdictions, more than it ever has. Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman says the federal funding, distributed through the Nebraska Crime Commission, as declined over the past few years, but nevertheless remains vital to keeping WING strong.
Overman says they are asking for $440,000 in the grant application, but expect quite a bit less, noting last year they received $70,000. There is some additional federal funding from the Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, but most of the rest of the funding comes from the communities involved in the task force.
There are currently officers from Scottsbluff, Gering, Scotts Bluff County, Cheyenne County, Sidney, Alliance, Chadron, and three officers from the Nebraska State Patrol, including the Task Force Commander Dana Korell.
