Gering council approves contract for restaurant operators

The Gering city council has approved a new contract with a group financed by Gering businessman Sal Munoz to operate the Monument Shadows Golf Course restaurant. The group, which includes two unnamed active partners who will manage the kitchen and restaurant operation, plans to re-name the restaurant "Caddies" and will do business as "Caddies, LLC".

Gering councilman Dan Smith, chair of the council's Recreation Committee, says the contract extends through September of 2014 with a monthly rental fee of $1,500. The rental fee includes all utilities except cable television. Smith says the fee will likely be increased at the end of the contract depending on the success of the business and city support.

Smith says the city is investing approximately $100,000 into the operation, including the purchase of dishes, utensils, kitchenware, chairs, patio furniture and televisions for the lounge area. Over $40,000 of the city's investment is from keno funds, much of it to pay for a digital sign at Country Club Road and Five Rocks Road to promote daily specials and signs on the building itself. Smith says the money being spent also includes repairs to the building's HVAC system and upgrades to the restrooms.

Smith says the restaurant won't officially open until it has a liquor license, a process which is projected to take until mid-April. But the facility may have a soft opening to provide service to golfers April 1st.
