Operation Lifesaver train in Gering Wednesday

A special passenger train is making stops this week in several Nebraska communities over Union Pacific Railroad lines to promote highway-railroad crossing and pedestrian safety through a program called Operation Lifesaver.

Hundreds of residents, community leaders, law enforcement officers and education officials are learning about highway-railroad grade crossing safety and the consequences of trespassing on railroad property.

The train was in Gering Wednesday and made four trips to Chimney Rock and back. It will be making similar short trips in Kearney Thursday and Friday, and will be in North Platte over the weekend.
