Bjorling: Planned reorganization not unusual in healthcare
Regional West Physicians Clinic Board Chair Dr. Vince Bjorling says the restructuring at Regional West Medical Center to find efficiencies and saving is not unusual right now in the medical world.
Hospital CEO and President Todd Sorensen announced Wednesday the Physicians Clinic and the hospital plan to combine into one organization as part of an effort to find $20 million in savings by the end of 2015. Dr. Bjorling emphasized Omaha hospital officials announced six weeks ago they need to cut $100 million from their operation, so trying to find ways to cut costs is what is happening right now in the medical world.
Sorensen indicated Wednesday he felt there was a lot of duplication that could be eliminated between the Clinic and the hospital. Bjorling was more cautious, saying he would have to wait and see exactly what could be cut. Regarding a suggestion by Sorensen to have both organizations share one lab, Bjorling said the physicians would likely have to retain some lab services to efficiently run their practices.
Bjorling emphasized both organizations have tried to provide integrated care even though they have been separate. Bjorling said while there may be accreditation and other hoops to jump through by putting them together, he believes it can be done effectively.
