Scotts Bluff County man tests positive for West Nile Virus

A Scotts Bluff County man in his 50's has tested positive for West Nile Virus. The Scotts Bluff County Community Health nurses received notice of the positive test results earlier this week and are completing the follow-up investigation. This is the first positive human case in the county this season.

West Nile Virus activity is increasing in all areas of Nebraska, and Scotts Bluff County had 6 additional pools of mosquitoes from the Minatare and Morrill areas which also tested positive for WNV. With increased outdoor activity associated with County Fairs and soon fall sports activities, we recommend that if residents are not already taking precautions to avoid mosquito bites, now is the time to start.

• Use mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535.
• Dress in long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks when you're outside.
• Limit outdoor activities at Dusk and dawn are times when mosquitoes are most active.
• Drain standing water around your home. Standing water and warmth breed mosquitoes.
