Josh Abbott Band to headline OTD Kick-off Concert
The Oregon Trail Days Committee today (Wed) announced they will once again do a kick-off concert on the weekend before Oregon Trail Days. Concert Committee Chair Bill Peters announced that the "Josh Abbott Band" will be the featured act, with opening act "Stonegate Road."
Josh Abbott founded the band in 2006 in Lubbock, Texas while attending Texas Tech University where he was a member of the Texas Epsilon chapter of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He paused college, a thesis away from his Masters degree, to pursue a musical career full time, and founded the band with fraternity brothers Austin Davis, Neel Huey, and Drew Hurt. The band recorded a demo featuring "Taste" in 2007 and began touring in 2008. Huey and Hurt dropped out, and Preston Wait and Eddie Villanueva joined. James Hertless and Caleb Keeter would soon join in 2010. In 2009 the band recorded and released their first album "Scapegoat."
A second album, She's Like Texas, followed in 2010. This album has made the Top Country Albums charts. Michael Berick of Allmusic rated it four stars out of five, comparing it to Steve Earle and saying that Abbott's songwriting showed "maturity". They recorded their first official sell out crowd at the World's Largest Honky Tonk "Billy Bobs Texas" located in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards on February 10th, 2010 which sold 6,000 tickets.
It includes the single "Oh, Tonight", which debuted at number 59 and peaked at 42 on the Country Songs charts in early 2011. The song is a duet with Nashville Star season 5 finalist and Universal Music recording artist Kacey Musgraves.
The band's third CD, Small Town Family Dream, was released on April 24, 2012. The first single, "Touch," was released in early February and was made available digitally on February 14. The music video for it features reality tv star Melissa Rycroft and her husband Tye Strickland, another of Abbott's fraternity brothers. The album's third single "I'll Sing About Mine" released to country radio in 2012.
The concert will be held on Saturday, July 6th at the Five Rocks Amphitheater. Gates will open at 6 pm with Stonegate beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the gate. Tickets can be reserved online now at oregontraildays.com, or will be available at local outlets on April 1st.
