Elbert "Al" Lee Corr, 82, Melbeta
Elbert Lee Corr "Al", 82, of Melbeta, passed away November 27, 2012 at his home. Services will be held Saturday, December 1st at 10:00 am at Calvary Memorial Evangelical Free Church in Gering with Pastor Gary Hashley officiating. Interment will be in West Lawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by the U. S. Air Force. The Elbert L. Corr Memorial Fund has been established to begin an Aviation Scholarship Fund.
Elbert was born April 8, 1930 at home south of Melbeta. He grew up learning farming and ranching from his dad and graduated from Melbeta High School in 1948. He then traveled to Texas where he sold Hawaiian Tremolo's, or as he called them "fiddles", and bought his first airplane. Elbert married Jane Harris of Denison, TX March 28, 1953 in Ashdown, Arkansas. Elbert served in the Air Force as a jet mechanic then moved his family to California where he worked on Lear jets. He started Corr Pool Service with his brother Paul. Elbert enjoyed taking his family on camping and fishing trips. He loved baseball and coached the Little League All Stars. In 1969, when his Dad retired, he moved back to Melbeta to farm and ranch.
Elbert continued flying throughout his life and was an active member of the EAA. He was instrumental in bringing the Blue Angels to the Scottsbluff Air Show. He was a successful farmer and served on the Sugar Beet Board for a number of years. Elbert enjoyed raising quarter horses on the Horse Head Ranch, south of Melbeta, where he loved to entertain guests. He hosted the Melbeta Open Golf tournament on his ranch, held family picnics at the park and was always happy to give everyone a ride in his airplane. Elbert was an avid storyteller and gave tours of "the old house" packed with antiques and local history. He played numerous musical instruments by ear. He loved to sing, dance and play the piano and gave his family the gift of music. Elbert led a full and wondrous life and will be greatly missed by many.
He is survived by his wife of 59 1/2 years Jane; sons Mike Corr of Gering and Alan (Gwen) Corr of Minden; daughters Denise Corr of Lincoln and Pam Peterson of Shawnee, KS. Grandchildren: Janelle Corr, Tracy (Matt) Johnsen great-grandchildren Audrey and Alden, Erin (Don) Miller and Mandy Corr; Trevor (Leslie) Batt great-grandchildren Gracie and Tucker, Kendy (Jared) Brock great-grandchildren Hayden, Hudson and Marley, Coltin Fredrick and Calvin Fredrick; Casey Corr and Carson Corr. Brothers Paul (Jeanne) Corr of Simi Valley, CA, Jack (Joann) Corr of Scottsbluff, Harvey (Carol) Corr of Moore Park, CA and sister Kathy (Bill) Davis of Baldwin City, KS. He filled the shoes of "Dad" and "Grandpa" for many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Elbert in death were his parents Paul and Helen Corr, sister Carol Darnall, brother Howard and grandson Cory.
