Fire scare south of Chadron Sunday
A fire scare Sunday south of Chadron when a fire erupted adjacent to Highway 385 at one time endangering Pine Ridge Job Corps structures. The Region 23 Fire Complex, Sierra Task Force responded to the area with 100 people.
Sierra Division Group Supervisor, John Thornburg said "The fire was already 3-5 acres, was burning timber and grass, and had 'very high growth potential and the Job Corps structures were threatened."
Within a short period of time, the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department, the local Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands unit and additional units and resources from the Region 23 Fire Complex were able to hold the start-up to less than seven acres. Two Region 23 engines remained on scene for night patrol, and resources will mop up and achieve 100% containment today .
