Harvey Yekel, 82, Scottsbluff

Harvey Yekel, 82, longtime resident of Scottsbluff, lost his battle with cancer at the Regional West Medical Center on March 16, 2013. Services will be held at the Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff, at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 with Pastor Ed Hunzeker officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Navy. Friends may visit and pay respects at Dugan Kramer Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com

Harvey was born in Bayard, Nebraska to Alex and Kathryn (Green) Yekel on January 1, 1931. He attended Bayard and Scottsbluff schools, lettering in track and football and graduating from Scottsbluff High School in 1950. Harvey then married Jean Jackson and entered the Navy in 1952, being honorably discharged in 1954 at which time he assumed his father's farm and later farmed on his own. Harvey then began a career at Lockwood Corporation in 1966 in which he traveled the country and the world, during these years Harvey entered his second marriage to Miriam Specht and settled into his home at the Farmsteads in Scottsbluff. In 1986 Harvey retired from Lockwood but as was his nature, continued his work in various manners the most enjoyable being his car transport business and working a decade plus of campaigns at the Sugar Factory.

Harvey's enjoyments in life were his family, farming, gardening, getting the deal at an auction, his pets and traveling the roads of America.

Harvey is survived by his children Roger (Cindy) Yekel of Ft. Collins, CO, Ronald (Diane) Yekel of Summerville, SC and Suzanne (Paul) O'Brien of Appleton, WI; brother Steve (Starla) Yekel of Cody WY; sister Jovetta (Charlie) Stricker of Gering NE; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great- great-grandchild; and 2 beloved cats Hobo and Callie.

He was preceded in death by his wife Miriam, parents and an infant brother Keith.

In lieu of flowers a donation in memoriam may be made to the Veterans Home in Scottsbluff.
