Lemoyne D. "Butch" Baum, age 76, of Gering, passed away unexpectedly early Sunday morning, April 28, 2013. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff with Reverend Matt Fowler officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. Memorials in Lemoyne's memory may be made in lieu of flowers to the Lemoyne D. Baum Memorial Fund with recipients to be designated at a later date. Lemoyne was born August 2, 1936 in Mitchell to John and Minnie (Sieb) Baum. At an early age he moved with his parents to the Cedar Valley rural area of Gering, where he began his formal education. He graduated from Gering High School in the class of 1955. During those years he participated in basketball, American Legion baseball, and 4-H. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration and Construction from the University of Denver in May 1959, where he was affiliated with the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity. He answered the call of his country and served two years in the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge in September 1961.
Lemoyne was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Martin on January 20, 1963 at the Salem Congregational Church in Scottsbluff, having just observed their 50th wedding anniversary three months ago. One daughter, Shelly Ann, was born to this union. They made their home in Gering all their married years except for a brief move to Torrington, Wyoming.
He began his 44 year career in the lumber and construction industry as a design and draftsman with the Bloedorn Lumber Company, later becoming manager of their Torrington Lumber Company and then Inter-City Lumber Company in Gering. In November 1987 he joined Paul L. Reed Construction Company as construction estimator and project superintendent. He retired in June 2005 after which he and Patricia enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with their family and friends in the Phoenix, AZ area. He was an avid Nebraska Husker fan and followed the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks baseball teams.
Lemoyne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff and a life member of Elks Lodge #1367. Over the years he served on a number of boards and committees in the area including the Scottsbluff-Gering United Chamber of Commerce, Gering Oregon Trail Days Board of Directors, 19 years as Oregon Trail Days parade chairman, and church board of trustees.
Lemoyne is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann, of Gering; daughter, Shelly Ann (Steven) Hill of Goodyear, AZ; granddaughter, Ashley Lynne Hill and grandson, Connor Jordan Hill both of Goodyear, AZ; mother, Minnie Baum of Gering; sister, Kathleen (Vern) Keller of Scottsbluff; nephews, Scott Keller of Lincoln, Brett Keller stationed in Hawaii and Trent Keller of Lincoln; mother-in-law, Lydia Martin of Gering; and a host of extended family and friends.
Lemoyne was preceded in death by his father, John Baum in May 2004; an infant sister; paternal and maternal grandparents; father-in-law, David D. Martin; brother-in-law, Gary A. Martin; and a number of uncles, aunts, and cousins.
