Firefighters respond to expensive machine shed fire

Firefighters from several departments spent three hours fighting a machine shed fire Sunday night. The Scottsbluff Rural fire department responded to the fire at the Kevin Brunner residence on Hessler Drive about two and a half miles north of the airport around 8 p.m. Scottsbluff Rural Assistant Fire Chief Paul Reisig says they found the southwest corner of the shed on fire, and called for help from Minatare, Gering, and members with the Airport fire department.

Deputy State Fire Marshall Mike Turner says sparks from wood burning stove that wasn't properly capped flew over the top of the shed, caught the nearby grass on fire, which in turn ignited the shed. Damage to the shed is estimated at $40,000, Damage to the contents is estimated at $30,000 including a Chevy pickup, a 1929 custom rod Ford sedan, a boat and an arctic cat.

Close to 30 firefighters were on the scene Sunday night for three hours battling the fire in icy cold, windy conditions. Reisig said 16 years ago firefighters responded to the same location for a similar machine shed fire. The property had different owners at that time.
