The Longs Peak Council of the Boy Scouts of America will be honoring Carmen & Lou Kleager during their annual Distinguished Citizen Award dinner Thursday evening at the Gering Civic Center. Gary Shoemaker is Sr. District Executive for both the Tri-Trails and High Plains Districts of the Boys Scouts. Shoemaker says both Carmen and Lou have held multiple leadership roles with the Boy Scouts over the years.

Both have served together on many projects for the Boy Scouts, Wildcat Hills Nature Center, YMCA and multiple church activities. Currently Carmen is serving as Parish Nurse for the Lakota Lutheran Center and Lou is serving on the Board of Directors for Potter's Wheel Ministries.

Both Carmen and Lou have held multiple leadership roles with the Boy Scouts. These have been at the local, regional and national levels. Both have received the District Award of Merit and Council Silver Beaver recognitions. They have also served multiple National Scout Jamborees and have been to all three Boy Scout High Adventure Bases.

Shoemaker says both Kleagers believe in and enjoy community volunteerism, and are both certainly worthy of this honor. A reception will be held starting at 6 p.m. Thursday with dinner to follow at 6:30.
