George W. Pershing, 87, Scottsbluff

George W. Pershing, 87, of Scottsbluff, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Heritage Estates in Gering after a brief battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Northfield Assembly of God Church in Gering with Pastor Kiley Callaway officiating. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Scottsbluff.

Memorials will go to Chuck Wagon Church or to The Back Pack To School For Children In Need c/o Northfield Assembly of God Church. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services in Scottsbluff is in charge of the arrangements.

George was born in Watts, Oklahoma to Frank and Altie (Hedges) Pershing on March 27, 1926. He attended school in Watts and Scottsbluff. He left school to go fight in World War II. In 1997, he received an honorary diploma. He served in the United States Army in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He attended Nashville Auto and Diesel College in Nashville, Tennessee receiving a diploma in 1948.

George married Myrtle L. Arends on December 1, 1956. To this union four children were born, Donald, Carla, Connie, and Ronald. They were married 50 years before her death in February 2007. On February 13, 2010, he married Carol Tunin.

He worked as a farmhand and at Magnolia. He worked with the Gering School System for 22 years doing a variety of jobs. After retiring in 1988, he went to work as a crossing guard in Scottsbluff. He was completing his 24th year at the time of his death.

He was a man who could not just sit still, so mowing lawns and scooping snow for people kept him busy. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, walking, and working on his pickups. He loved talking to people whether he knew them or not.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Chuck Wagon Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carol of Scottsbluff; sons, Donald (Jane) Pershing of Rockford, Illinois, and Ronald Pershing of Sugar Creek, Missouri; daughters, Carla (Kelly) Gallawa of Gering, and Connie Pershing of Scottsbluff; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Myrtle; and his brothers, Dave and Elbert.
