Scottsbluff progressing on establishing "Quiet Zone"
The city of Scottsbluff is progressing rapidly on installing islands at the city's rail crossings in order to establish a train "Quiet Zone" throughout the community. Scottsbluff Public Works Director Mark Bohl says islands have been installed at the 9th Avenue, 5th Avenue and 20th Street crossings. Islands will be installed Friday at Avenue B, leaving only Avenue I and Broadway to be completed.
Bohl says Broadway will be last so the island installment can be part of the Broadway repaving project. Bohl says once the city is done the only thing left is for Burlington Northern Santa Fe to install electronic warning devices.
Bohl says he is hopeful the railroad will install what they need by this fall so the Quiet Zone" can then be certified by the Federal Railroad Administration.
Avenue B will be closed Friday beginning at 8:30 a.m. and not be open until late in the evening while the quiet zones islands are installed.
