Jaycees name removed from annual fireworks show

The annual fireworks show near Western Nebraska Community College is planned again this Wednesday, but the Nebraska Jaycees have asked that it not be called a Jaycees sponsored show.

Kirsten Parker, Vice President of the Nebraska Jaycees, says the local chapter was disbanded in 2006, and the use of the Jaycees name to promote the show "has to end".

Parker says false use of the name puts many of the charters and chapters around the nation at risk for liability. Parker says Nebraska Jaycees by-laws indicate once a chapter disbands, the name can no longer be used for publicity, fundraising or operational purposes.

Craig Lashley, who has operated the fireworks show with Tracy Ford, says Ford was a proud Jaycee and it was tough for him to give it up. Lashley says the fireworks show is now in the name of the "Scottsbluff Fireworks Fund."

Lashley says they don't make any money to out on the show and need at least $10,000 to operate it. They have sent postcards asking for donations to Scottsbluff Fireworks Fund, P.O. Box 271, Scottsbluff, Nebraska 69361.
