Coal Fire at Torrington sugar factory

There was a lot of black smoke but no explosions and no injuries as the result of a fire at Western Sugar's Torrington factory yesterday.

Torrington Fire Chief Jeremy Wardell says the fire was in a coal conveyor assembly and firefighters were at the scene for three hours Sunday afternoon cooling it down.

The fire did not cause any interruptions in processing this year's crop because Western uses natural gas as a backup for operating the factory.

The Yoder fire department provided mutual aid.
