Sister Monica Witte, 86, died Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Marian Residence in Alliance, NE.
She was born August 26, 1926 at Plaza, North Dakota to Theodore and Clementine (Woywode) Witte and was named Eunice Clementine.
She entered the Sisters of St. Frances of Penance and Christian Charity at Marycrest in Denver, CO on November 10, 1945. She professed her vows on August 16, 1947 at Marycrest. At her profession of vows she took the name of Sister Mary Monica.
Sister Monica received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Regis College in Denver in 1960 and her Master of Arts Degree from St. Mary College in Xavier, KS in 1964. Sister Monica served in teaching beginning at St. Elizabeth's in Denver, St. Francis Mission, SD, Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge, SD and St. Agnes in Scottsbluff, NE. She served as the Local Superior at St. Agnes in Alliance, NE from 1963 to 1971 and then for 10 years again at Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge until 1981. Her ministries would take her back to Denver and then returning to Pine Ridge serving at the Red Cloud Indian School working in teaching and pastoral staff. In 2006 she retired and returned to Alliance.
Survivors include her brother, Jim Witte of Waukee, IA and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, June 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Marian Chapel with Father Lou Nollette officiating. Wake services will be Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Marian Chapel. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery, Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
Memorials may be given to Red Cloud Indian School, 100 Mission Drive, Pine Ridge, SD 57770-2100.
