County approves reclamation, approve cable contract, tourism grants

The Scotts Bluff County Commissioners have approved reclamation efforts by Western Engineering on a controversial section of land near the North Platte River west of Scottsbluff. The company had been barred by court order to continue mining at the location after the county claimed the operation of an asphalt plant had caused damage to a county road, resulted in a breach in the river and was threatening adjacent private property.

Western had been required to do the reclamation in order to continue mining at another location near Mitchell. Engineer Ken Arnold said he still had some moving of dirt and planting of vegetation to do along with installing a couple tubes for water.

The commissioners also approved a new cable contract with Allo Communications at the detention center, saving an estimated $4,000 yearly from the previous contract with Charter. The board also approved two tourism is a ten thousand dollar grant to sponsor the Monument Marathon Expo and the other is $21,500 to assist with a digital sign at Highway 26 and South Mitchell Road to promote local events including those at the Fairgrounds.
