Alliance Chamber Director retires

Today is the final day on the job for Alliance Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dixie Nelson, who is retiring after eight years on the job. The Alliance Chamber is hosting an open house for Nelson from 10 am to 5 pm at the chamber office at 305 Box Butte Avenue. Refreshments will be served.

Nelson, who is a native of Alliance, has spent her adult life working in Alliance, including stints with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the former Dayco plant and with UPS. She also attended school at WNCC and Chadron State College.

Nelson says when she started serving as the chamber director eight years ago, her board asked her to work on increasing membership and to upgrade the entity's image following an embezzlement case that surfaced in 2004.

Nelson says she has enjoyed working with people from Alliance and across the state. She says one of the best moves the chamber made was combining office space with Box Butte Development, Historic Main Street Alliance, and the Alliance Visitors Bureua to create Box Butte Central at 305 Box Butte Avenue.

Nelson adds that even though she is retiring as a chamber director, she is staying in Alliance and will work some part-time jobs to help keep busy.

Nelson's successor is Susan Unzicker, who began working for the chamber five months ago as the assistant director. Unzicker's first official day as the new chamber director will be April 1.
