Gering council approves grant application for Legacy of the Plains Museums
The Gering city council Thursday approved applying for a grant from USDA Rural Development that will provide a major loan to the Legacy of the Plains Museums.
If the application is approved, the city would provide $60,000 toward a $300,000 grant from the federal agency. The city would then turn around and loan the $300,000 to the Museums at zero percent interest, with the payback to the city placed in an economic development re-use fund.
Legacy of the Plains Museum Director Katie Bradshaw says the financing is important because it will bridge the gap between new construction expenses and ongoing capital fundraising. Bradshaw says the city should know within a few months whether the application has been approved as it competes with other funding requests.
