Walgren Lake reopens

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ A state recreation area in northwest Nebraska is set to reopen under an agreement with a local community group.

Walgren Lake State Recreation Area will open on Thursday. The SRA in Sheridan County has been closed since Sept. 16 because of a $30 million backlog of deferred maintenance needs for state parks and recreation areas.

he Nebraska Game and Parks Commission closed 24 state recreation areas so it could redirect its staff and resources to address the backlog. Some areas need to come into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and meet environmental requirements.

The group Friends of Walgren Lake has agreed to open and maintain the
recreation area until Game and Parks resumes its operations in April.
