Kimball council approves new councilman, Police Chief

The Kimball city council Monday evening approved Mayor James Schnell's appointments to fill a vacant council position and for the position of Police Chief.

The council unanimously approved Acting Police Chief Darrin Huff as the new Police Chief, succeeding Mark Simpson, who resigned last week. The council also approved Kimball native James Schields to the council. Schields is a Clean Harbors employee and will fill the term of Jim Merryfield, who was elected in 2012 prior to his resignation and whose term ends in the latter part of 2016.

The council also rescinded the ordinance that created the clerk/treasurer position and will consider at their May 7th meeting approving another ordinance that would establish separate clerk and treasurer positions.

Mayor James Schnell says the plan is to have Rosie Russell continue in the clerk's position and have Meg Strauch take over as Treasurer. Schnell says that will allow Strauch to work with city administrator Daniel Ortiz on a project to put the city budget online, free Russell up to simply work on city clerk and administrative responsibilities, and provide more time for Ortiz to work with the new economic development director on bringing more business into the community.
