Man accused of sexually assaulting young girls has 1st court appearance

A Gering man accused of touching two young girls inappropriately had a 1st appearance in Scotts Bluff County Court Monday after been charged with two counts of third degree sexual assault of a child.

55 year old Daniel Clay is accused of committing the indecent acts in 2008 or 2009, according to the complaints filed in Scotts Bluff County Court. The girls are now 10 and 16.

Court documents say Clay was the boyfriend of the two girl's grandmother and approached the children while they were at their grandmother's house, but while the grandmother was not home. The documents say the younger child came forward after hearing of a friend telling a teacher about something similar that had happened to her. The older girl was questioned after the younger girl said her cousin had told her about an assault that she had experienced.

Clay is being held on a $200,000 bond, and could receive up to 20 years in prison on each count if convicted. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 27th at 9:30 a.m.
