The Panhandle Safety and Wellness Awards Luncheon was held Thursday at the Gering Civic Center. Governor Dave Heineman and Nebraska's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joe Acierno were on hand to present the Governor's Excellence in Wellness Awards and Nebraska Safety Council Awards.

The Governor's Award honors organizations that are planting, growing and harvesting a quality worksite wellness program.

At the Grower Level, for demonstrating a more mature wellness program, Cabela's, Fred A. Lockwood and Company P.C., the Panhandle Public Health District, and the Upper niobrara White Natural Resources District were honored.

Governor Heineman said these businesses show that the Nebraska business community is making great strides in wellness. He commended all involved in the awards for their dedication, commitment and focus on wellness.

Heineman said as a state that is something we have been doing, being the only state in America to receive the C. Everett Koop National Health Award.

The Governor says if you're focused on wellness, you will have healthier, better employees who are more productive at work, and that's what the State is trying to do.

Nebraska Safety Council Spirit Awards went to Panhandle Cooperative Association and Parker Hannifin. And the Safety Council's Star Award was presented to Cameco-Crow Butte Resources.

Following the luncheon, the Governor and Acierno joined participants in walking three times around the outside of the Civic Center to promote wellness.
