Elizabeth De Guernsey Gilmore was born March 18, 1920 in Scottsbluff, the daughter of Lloyd W. Guernsey and Edna M. (Carpenter) Guernsey.

Betty attended Scottsbluff Public Schools and graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1937.  Shortly after graduation, she married Donald Gilmore and began working at the telephone office as an operator. At the start of World War II Donald was called to duty and Betty remained in Scottsbluff with their two daughters. An Army airbase opened in Scottsbluff and Betty was hired to work for the Corps. of Engineers during the base's construction. Once it was completed, she continued as a switchboard operator and trained men in that capacity.

In 1957 Betty was hired by then City Manager Carsten Leikvold to the city police department, becoming the first female desk sergeant in Nebraska.

After 10 years of service, Betty was offered a position at the Scotts Bluff County Attorney's office from Marvin Holscher. Betty eventually became the office manager and went from fulltime to part-time in 1983 and continued working in the office until 2011.

She will be remembered fondly by her daughter Marcia (Ron) Groskopf of Durango, Colorado; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren and many close friends.
