Dawes, Sheridan County firefighters battle grass fire

Firefighters from Hemingford and Chadron spent the afternoon yesterday fighting a range fire in southern Dawes and western Sheridan County that burned several acres.

A controlled burn apparently got out of control and spread across grasslands between Highways 385 and 87.

The fire was aided by winds gusting from the south at 30 to 35 mph and temps in the mid 90s as well as very dry conditions due to a lack of winter and spring moisture.
