Future Cloudy for Farm Bill/Deficit-Reduction Package
As of Friday, House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas expressed optimism that a deal could be reached on a five-year farm bill. However, enactment could be delayed until early 2013 as part of a larger deficit-reduction package. Lucas did report great progress - on the commodity title. Senate Ag Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow says - we are in a room working on the final pieces. I am confident we will be ready by the end of the year.
Still, Representative Lucas sees the need for some transition given the complexity of the changes proposed in farm policy, Stabenow resisted the notion of any extension that would distract from completing the task at hand.
