Della Joan Hayward, 80, Hyannis
Della Joan Hayward, 80, of Hyannis Nebraska died peacefully at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance on October 4th, 2012 following complications from cancer.
Della was born November 9th, 1931, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, the daughter of Leo and Elma (Croxen) Jansen. Della attended Scottsbluff High School and received her teaching certificate from Chadron State College which led her to teaching in rural Sandhills of Nebraska. Della married Wayne Wakely in 1953, moved to Hyannis, and raised three children. Following her divorce in 1963 she taught in rural McPherson County and in Hyannis. She met and married Merle Hayward in 1968 in Hyannis blending and adding to family.
She served as Grant County Superintendent for four years and has actively served the community of Hyannis for over 45 years. Della was a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church and Guild, the Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Stockgrower's Association, served on the Hyannis Swimming Pool board and Windmill Days planning commission.
Della loved performing arts. She was a member of the Village Players theatre group in Hyannis where she performed in 28 plays, three of which she wrote and directed. Della was an avid supporter of school activities - receiving 'Fan of the Year' in 2008. She loved to travel and spend time with her family and friends.
Della is survived by her husband Merle Hayward of Hyannis; son, Charles (Pam) Wakely of Palmdale, CA; daughters, Lori McDonald of Fort Collins, CO, Stephanie Stumph of Chadron, Holly (Ron) Westemeier of Alliance; step-daughters Susan Hayward of Littleton, CO, and Carol Chatfield of Belleville, KS; sisters Darlene (Pat) Ashcroft of Gunnison, CO, Ermadean Haas of Mitchell, Ilo Fegler of Ogallala and Loretta/Midge (Carl) Curtis of Albuquerque, NM; sister's-in-law Kay (Jim) Soliday of Portland, OR, and Carol Hayward of Fort Collins, CO. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Caitlin, Logan, Reece, Mason, Megan, Willa, Laura, Jonathan, Natalie, and 2 great-grandchildren: Mitch, Ryan and numerous nieces and nephews.
Della was preceded in death by her parents, sister Arlene Gore of Orange California, step-son Robert Hayward of Hyannis, and granddaughter Sheila.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 8th from 1-4 pm at Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Alliance. Requiem service will be held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church at 5 pm Monday. Funeral service will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church in Hyannis on Tuesday, October 9th at 10:30 a.m. Bishop James Krotz and Rev. Cheryl Harris will officiate. Burial will be at the Hyannis Cemetery.
