NFU Urges President to Include Farm Bill in Deal to Avoid Fiscal Cliff

What happens with the farm bill comes down to what happens with the fiscal cliff - according to many ag experts. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson sent a letter to President Obama on Thursday saying severe impacts will be felt by farmers, consumers and agribusiness in early 2013 if a new farm bill is not passed. Johnson says the costs of a short-term extension of a farm bill will be high - and the work to pass an extension is just as great as the work to pass a five-year farm bill. U.S. farm and food policy supports 16-million jobs across the nation, helps farmers manage their risk, feeds the nation, provides important conservation and energy programs and invests in the rural economy - according to Johnsons - all of which are in jeopardy without a farm bill.
