John Harvey Gallawa, 86, Scottsbluff
John Harvey Gallawa, 86, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Salem Congregational Church with Pastor Dale Brown officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery with military rites by the United States Navy. Dinner will follow at the church. A memorial will be established and be designated by the family at a later date.
John was born June 26, 1927 at Scottsbluff, NE to John and Mary (Weimer) Gallawa. He received his early education at Roosevelt Elementary School and graduated from Scottsbluff High School. He entered the Navy at the age of 17 on April 25, 1945 and was honorably discharged August 9, 1946. John married the love of his life, Dorothy Gier, October 26, 1947 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Scottsbluff.
John was employed by Nebraska Public Power as a lineman for thirty years and owned and operated the Capri Motel for six years. He retired to spend time doing the things he enjoyed, traveling, gardening, golfing and spending time with his family. John always showed up at all events for grandkids, cheering them on and supporting everything they did. His ultimate joy was in family. John's smiling face, infectious laugh will forever live in the heart of those whose life he has touched! Goodbye husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and best friend until we meet again.
He was a member of Salem Congregational Church where he was confirmed, Elks Lodge #1367, and Scottsbluff Volunteer Fire Department where he received his sheepskin.
John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; son, Michael (Nancy) Gallawa; daughter Susan (Matthew) Vollmar; brothers: Jacob Gallawa, Robert (Donaline) Gallawa, and Walter (Francine) Gallawa; sisters Martha Whitlock, and Esther Corcoran; brother-in-law Ken (Eileen) Gier; Grandchildren: Michelle (Charles) Hilliard, Andrea Gallawa, Zachary Gallawa, Joshua (Cynthia) Guerue, Melissa (Willie) Craig, and Michelle Guerue; Great-Grandchildren: Madeline, Chase and Olivia Hilliard, Maxwell Gallawa, Kiley, Ilycia and Isaiah Guerue, Nathan, Joshua and Jackson Craig; stepbrother-in-law: Raymond (Joyce) Conrad and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law Amelia Gier and John Gier, brothers: Alex(Mary Ann) Gallawa and Adam (Minnie) Gallawa; sisters: infant Marie Gallawa, Kathryn (Ed) Williams, Leah (George) Hilzer and Mary (Cash) Regester.
