Blue Cross-Blue Shield says policyholders can have their current plan

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska announced today (Monday) it will allow individual policyholders who received cancel-and-replacement notices, the option of keeping their current 2013 plan, or choosing new insurance that complies with requirements of the health care law.

Tom Gilsdorf is director of product development and says the goal is to have everyone on the plan of their choice by January 1st. individual customers will be notified by letters being sent out on Wednesday.

Senior Vice President of Finance Jerry Byers says they'll likely face higher monthly premiums to do it. About 45,000 policyholders, representing about 88,000 people, got letters this fall indicating they would not be able to keep the old, often less-expensive Blue Cross private health insurance plans.

They were told they must instead purchase plans that comply with the Affordable Care Act. Action by the state Department of Insurance last Friday changed all that.
