Bluffs man wins state senior volunteer award

An 85-year-old Scottsbluff man has been honored as the Nebraska winner of the Home Instead Senior Care® network's Salute to Senior Service® award.

Harold Sommer is being recognized for his dedicated community service, including his work at Regional West Medical Center. He has been volunteering there since 1993, and in a given week can be found at the information desk, delivering cards and flowers to patients, working on mailings for the Volunteer Services and Human Resources department, putting yarn away for baby afghans, escorting chemotherapy patients from their physician's office to the recliners and distributing magazines to the waiting areas and lobbies.

As one of 50 state winners, Sommer earned $500 for his charity of choice – donated by Home Instead, Inc., contest sponsor. Sommer also will have a spot on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame on SalutetoSeniorService.com where his nomination story has been posted. As a state winner, Sommer now will be considered for the national Salute to Senior Service award.
