Manuel Romero, 99

A funeral mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for MANUEL ROMERO, 99, at 10am on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at the St Rose Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Ray Moss officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Guadalupe Society Scholarship Fund at St. Rose Catholic Church. Manuel passed away on June 19, 2013 in Torrington, Wyoming with his family by his bedside. A Wake/Rosary will be recited at the church on Monday evening, June 24 at 7pm. Visitation will be held at St Rose church on Monday beginning at 3pm and continuing thru the Rosary. Manuel was born on April 22, 1914 in El Paso, TX (Smeltertown, TX) to Mariana Munoz and Evaristo Romero. At the age of 8, Manuel migrated with his family to Wyoming and attended school in Guernsey, Wyoming. At the age of 10, he began working with his family performing agricultural field work once the family settled in Torrington. Manuel also worked at the sugar factory. On December 24, 1945, he married Mabel Hernandez. He then went to work for Union Pacific Railroad in 1949. After 30 years of service as a section man on the maintenance-away crew, Manuel retired in 1979.

Manuel enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, reading, and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed going on regular daily walks. He had a good sense of humor and loved sharing stories. He had a very memorable life which included living in the home he was raised in for the past 85 years. Manuel was proud of his family and they were all very special to him. He was blessed to have been in good health to take his last trip to Smeltertown, TX in August of 2012. Manuel touched many lives. He always took time to visit with everyone and anyone he met. One of his favorite places to meet people was at the post office and trips to Lyman, NE. Manuel will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel, of 67 years; their two children, Robert (Ruby) Romero of Liberal, KS and Margaret (Delfino) Martinez of Torrington, WY; his 5 special grandkids - Paul Romero of Liberal; Rick (Montina) Romero of Colorado Springs, CO; Andrea Lopez of Cheyenne, Jason Martinez of Casper, and Valerie (Kevin) Dawson of Cheyenne; 16 very special great grandkids; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Steven Martinez and all of his siblings.
