Hibberd: UNL committed to bean industry, pushes for better marketing and production
The Dean of Cooperative Extension at the University of Nebraska says the university is committed to the dry bean industry.
Dr. Chuck Hibberd told growers Tuesday at the annual Dry Bean Day held at the Gering Civic Center that he and the university will remain committed to doing the necessary research and support for the industry.
Hibberd said there are some issues facing growers even though prices are relatively high. He says producers need to continue to improve in the risk-management area.
Hibberd says the industry needs to work on increasing consumption and more markets for its product, noting producers have the capacity to grow more beans if the market is there. He also says producers need to push through what he called a "yield ceiling" that has remained stable for approximately a decade.
