Orozco remembered as "everyone's friend", future valedictorian
Gering High students and staff are remembering Mikal Orozco Monday just a little over 24 hours after a tragic railroad crossing accident that claimed the 17 year old senior's life early Sunday morning.
Principal Eldon Hubbard says Orozco was someone who was everyone's friend and fit in socially no mater what group she was involved with. Hubbard says Orozco was a 4.0 student, was headed to be a valedictorian, worked hard and did things the right way.
Hubbard says the school crisis team has been made available for students who need help dealing with the popular student's death. Hubbard says they are trying to make the day as normal as possible for students.
The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's office says they do not know why Orozco made the decision to go around the 21st Avenue crossing arms early Sunday morning that resulted in the fatal car-train accident or why she was out at 1:30 a.m.
