Witness taken into protective custody

The man who provided a false report about two girls drowning at Terry's Lake has been placed into protective custody. Scottsbluff Police Captain Brian Wasson says the man was in protective custody throughout the investigation.

Divers from three area fire departments, police officers and EMT's were called to the Terrytown lake Sunday to search for two young girls that the witness reported were drowning.

After initial search attempts, the man told Police one of the girls was a relative. Police were able to contact the girl and confirm with Police that she was safe in Omaha.

It's not known at this time whether any charges will be filed. Police say the initial call came in at 7:07 am and the divers stopped searching around 10:30.
