Officials: Heartland Expressway needs to be priority

The Nebraska Highway Commission and the Nebraska Department of Roads were told Friday morning quicker action is needed to complete the Heartland Expressway from Angora to Chadron.

The joint meeting of the two state agencies drew a full house to the Alliance Learning Center Friday morning.

Deb Cottier, the director of the Northwest Nebraska Development Corporation said enhanced economic development for the region depended on completion of the four-lane highway. Alliance City Manager J.D. Cox and Alliance Mayor Fred Feldges also expressed the same view.

Scottsbluff Mayor Randy Meininger also supported the highway development, but did so speaking as the President of Valley Ambulance Services. Meininger stressed that a four-lane highway through western Nebraska boils down to a safety issue. His thoughts were echoed by area farmer Marv Dickenson, who stated that moving farm equipment on the highway is a huge risk.
