Richard "Dick" D. Smith, 82, Bayard

Richard "Dick" D. Smith, 82 of Bayard, Nebraska passed away Friday, August 2, 2013 at Regional West Medical Center with his family by his side.

His graveside service will be held Monday, August 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at High Butte Cemetery, south of McGrew with Chaplain Rachel LaBounty officiating. There will be no visitation. Tributes of sympathy may be left at Bayard Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dick was born on June 8, 1931 on the family farm, shadowing Chimney Rock to George and Grace (Cleveland) Smith. He attended McGrew school. He helped his father on the farm for many years. He worked at the Western Nebraska Sugar Factory and then Faulkner Corn Grinding for a number of years and also assisted in ditch riding for Castle Rock.

He married Phyllis Pollat on 1965 and they lived in McGrew until 1999, moving to Bayard.

Dick attended Assembly of God Church in Bayard. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, drinking coffee and pepsi. He loved spending time with his family and his dog Sadie.

Dick is survived by his wife Phyllis Smith; daughter Judy and Kirt Deaver, granddaughter Jennifer McMurtry all of Bayard, step grandchildren Tyson Draper of Bayard and Amanda and Salagi Alejria of Bull Head City, AZ and two step great grandchildren; sisters Margaret and E.G. Poff of Portland, OR and Carol and Darrell Roberts of Bayard and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Nicholas McMurtry and infant brother Billy.
